The Shire Horse

The Shire horse is one of the oldest breed of draft horses and is the largest horse in the world by size. These horses can reach heights of over 19 HH. They were originally bred from the medieval war horses of the English knights. Today, the Shire horse exemplifies the new breed of draft horse. They are forward movers with big trots and strong bone. They can be used for many riding disciplines, as well as driving. They can be masterful in the show ring. Whilst we specialize in breeding, our horses also ride, drive, work and show. The Shire comes in several colors, including black, bay and gray, which looks like a pale white as they age. The Queen of England has her large carriage drawn by a beautiful pair of gray Shires. To see photos of our Shires, please visit our photo gallery on this web site.

We stand two stallions at DUCK FLATS FARM and ThunderHoof Stables.
