DUCK FLATS FARM and ThunderHoof Stables, located in beautiful Lysander Township, Onondaga County, New York, is a fully operational breeding farm featuring English Shire and Belgian Brabant draft horses. We also breed Finnish Landrace (Finn) and Wensleydale sheep along with Cashgora goats. DUCK FLATS FARM is a member of the American Shire Horse Association, the Shire Horse Society of England, the Canadian Shire Horse Association, the American Brabant Association, the Garden State Sheep Breeders Association and the New Jersey Draft Horse and Mule Association. The farm is owned and operated by Luana Pesco Koplowitz, Barry Koplowitz and Luana's father, Louis. These wonderful horses are gentle and very easy to handle despite their size and power. They come in many colors. At DUCK FLATS FARM and ThunderHoof Stables, we have two imported horses. The Shire Horse The Shire horse is one of the oldest breed of draft horses and is the largest horse in the world by size. These horses can reach heights of over 19 HH. They were originally bred from the medieval war horses of the English knights. Today, the Shire horse exemplifies the new breed of draft horse. They are forward movers with big trots and strong bone. They can be used for many riding disciplines, as well as driving. They can be masterful in the show ring. Whilst we specialize in breeding, our horses also ride, drive, work and show. The Shire comes in several colors, including black, bay and gray, which looks like a pale white as they age. The Queen of England has her large carriage drawn by a beautiful pair of gray Shires.
