The Wool Mill at DUCK FLATS FARM & ThunderHoof Stables

Located off Plainville Road in Plainville, New York, our wool mill is a complete process mill from raw fleece to finished garment. We are a small operation that applies individual care and attention to every client's order. As a local business, we differ from large wool mills in our ability to handle from very small orders (e.g., one fleece from the family hobby sheep) to very large orders from commercial flocks. All get the same individualized service.

Key Benefits

  • Large and small orders are accepted. Most wool mills have high minimum order requirements to process wool into yarn (e.g., 100 lbs). We have no minimum.
  • We give attention to quality and detail.
  • We provide processing to any point desired from roving, machine spun yarn, hand-spun and finished garments.

Wool Mill Processing Fees

Benefits of Our Services

  • We have one of the few full-service “sheep-to-shawl” wool mill operations with no minimum poundage in the United States. Give us a fleece and we can give you back a hand-made sweater or other one-of-a-kind piece using our unique AriaStitch® patterns.
  • Customer does not have to skirt the fleeces. We just ask that all belly and backside wool be removed.
  • We have no minimum poundage to make roving or yarn!
  • We specialize in small-fleece processing.
  • No extra charge for processing most specialty wool blends.

Yarn Pricing

  • $2.50 per ounce ($40.00 per pound) of finished skeins (millspun)
  • $6.00 per ounce of finished skeins (handspun)
  • We will process fleeces less than 1 pound for $4.00 per ounce.

Roving Pricing

  • $1.50 per ounce ($24.00 per pound) finished roving

Example of Weight/Pricing Fees

  • A 10-pound raw fleece will yield 3 to 7 pounds of finished roving or yarn depending on the amount of lanolin and dirt in the fleece. You are charged only for the finished product, not the raw weight of fleece. This makes our prices competitive with other mills.

Additional Costs

  • A $15.00 packing and handling fee per lot.
  • Costs for mailing yarn and/or roving back to the customer.

Additional Information

  • We can process huacaya alpaca fleece without blending
  • Due to the fine fiber diameter, Merino can be blended with wool 50/50 and then processed into roving or yarn.
  • Cotswold fleeces are difficult to process with our machines due to their lack of crimp; therefore we need a minimum of 30 pounds to process.
  • We cannot process fibers longer than 6 inches. We will cut long fibers to size for $15.00 per hour labor cost. We can process suri alpaca, llama, angora, qiviut and other specialty fibers in a 50/50 blend with wool. We will add in the wool free of charge as long as supplies last.
